1837 Village

In the year 1837, the village contained 49 houses and 331 inhabitants, was a post-town, had a chief constabulary police station with petty sessions being held on alternate Tuesdays.  Fairs were held on April 30th, June 9th, September 22nd and November 25th. There was a Presbyterian Church in Summerhill at that time. The present post-office was the residence of the Minister.

1901 Village

In 1901, records show two public houses, three general grocery shops and a sweet shop, (selling sugar sticks and peggy's legs) two lodging houses, a post office, a police barracks, a doctor's dispensary (now butchers), private dwellings and a tannery, the remnants of which can be seen behind the row of houses on the right hand side. A bakery operated at that time too.  It was called "Kiernan's Bakery".  Brread and rock buns were delivered to the villagers by horse and cart, Summerhill House being its biggest delivery. Field's garage is now where the bakery was and the brick ovens belonging to the bakery can still be seen behind Field's house.

1983 Village

In 1983 there were three general grocery shops, a post office, a garage, a chemist, a guard's barracks, a cafe, a furniture manufacturer and a doctor's surgery in the village.

2000 Village

In 2000 there are over 600 families in the parish. There are 40 businesses. There is a new Industrial Estate just outside the Village, on the Dublin road, containing 7 factories. This gave a huge boost to employment locally. They are: Summerhill Hardware, Manor Foods, J.J. Doherty, LCC Clothing, MI Flues, Datastory, and Aidan Hanna.

In the village itself there is a supermarket, a chemist, post office, guards barracks, 2 garages, Credit Union, a public house, a cafe, a take-away, a butcher, vets clinic, a furniture manufacturer, a doctor's surgery, a chocolate factory, 2 hairdressers, the Community Centre, tennis and basketball courts.
