"The medium I used in all four was colored pencil.
Howard's mom had bought me a set after seeing a pencil drawing I had done. It's hard to say how long they took because I would work on a drawing for a while then set it aside for weeks at a time.
The first one I did was the one of Amber (daughter).
I did it just to see if I could. I guess it turned out OK for a first attempt. The second one was the tiger. I drew it from a photo that was in the newspaper, and I used other photos to get the fur the right color and texture. The hardest part was the bark on the tree. I didn't think I'd ever get it right. I finally got a piece of wood and studied it. I entered it in an art show in Maysville (MO) and it won best of show. It also won an honorable mention in the "Artists" magazine contest (one of 50 hon. mentions) out of hundreds of entries. I was offered a thousand dollars for it once. The next one was the Indian which I did for daddy for Christmas one year. I started it in plenty of time but of course had to rush to finish it. His face and wrinkles were probably the hardest area to get right. I should have spent more time on his outfit and the background but.... The fox came last. It was a compilation of two photos. It's my least favorite."
